The Federal Procurement Process: Getting Started as a Small Business

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Expanding your business into the realm of federal contracting can be a great step in the right direction, but only if you know what you are getting into. Many are ill-prepared for the rules, laws, and regulations unique to those businesses under contract with the federal government. This can lead to costly errors and even potential legal problems.gsa contract

The Federal Procurement Process: Getting Started as a Small Business

1) Do you qualify as a Small Business for Contracting Opportunities with the Government? This is very important to establish if you plan on registering for government contracting as a small business. The U.S. Small Business Administration defines a small business as an organization that:

  • Is organized for profit;
  • Has a place of business in the US;
  • Operates primarily within the U.S. or makes a significant contribution to the U.S. economy through payment of taxes or use of American products, materials or labor;
  • Is independently owned and operated; and
  • Is not dominant in its field on a national basis.

If you do not meet these standards, your business does not qualify as a “small business.”

2) You will need to register your Business. You will need the following items to complete registration:

  • Your NAICS codes
  • Your Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS)
  • Your Federal Tax Identification Number (TIN or EIN)
  • Your Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes
  • Your Product Service codes (optional but useful)
  • Your Federal Supply Classification codes (optional but useful)
