The Cyber Security Scandal

Friday, July 26th, 2013

The United States has become a digital civilization. Everything that we do is backed up to the internet and we rely on computers with our most precious information. Recently, it has become painfully aware that our digital lives are under attack and the protective measures that were previously working have begun to fail. No one is safe from cyber-attacks as Apple, The New York Times and others have recently been the victims of cyber security scandals.Network servers and Earth globe

The cyber security attacks aren’t just limited to American businesses, American intellectual property has also been targeted. The loss of American intellectual property in cyber-attacks is called “the greatest transfer of wealth in history” by the National Security Agency. All the while, the government is spending close to $50 billion on computer security. It has become clear that most of those funds are spent on ineffective security systems.

Security is an crucial part of computer architecture and design that must be incorporated from the bottom up. It cannot be passed off onto the users or relegated to an after-the-fact strategy. Then it becomes as effective as using a band aid to cover up a bullet wound.

GSA Contracting Information

Friday, July 19th, 2013

gsa contractThe United States General Services Administration, also known as the GSA, awards more than $40 billion every year private enterprises from which is has contracted goods and services. The average annual is revenue for a business that holds a GSA contract is more than $2 million. The numbers show that getting a hold of a GSA contract provides a big opportunity for businesses both big and small. In fact, 80% of GSA contractors are small business, of GSA contractors, 40% are able to contract government business.

Simply put, a GSA contract is a license to do business with the federal government. Contracts are divided into 41 schedules that cover nearly every type of business enterprise. Businesses must apply for a contract under the appropriate schedule and go through an extensive application process that can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

If approved, the business receives a 5 year contract that is renewable for up to 3 more terms of 5 years each. There are many advantages to holding a GSA contract. Vendors on the GSA schedule receive priority over non-scheduled vendors. They enjoy the security of a long term contract and avoid the hassle of public bidding for contracts or soliciting the government sans contract.

However, this is not to say that obtaining a GSA contract is a guaranteed model for success. Businesses still compete with each other within their respective schedules, so the price has to be right for the government to seek your business.

GSA offers a free course on applying for a contract, but it is advisable to seek additional help from a GSA consultant when applying for a contract, in order to ensure the application meets all requirements. The government also provides data concerning awarded contracts at the Federal Procurement Data System website www.fdps.gov.

How Safe Is Cloud Computing?

Friday, July 5th, 2013

More companies are beginning to swap their traditional tangible data storage for cloud storage, but how safe is cloud computing? While no system is one hundred percent reliable, cloud computing is actually safer than on-site data storage. The data stored in the cloud is protected by multiple levels of security. There are layers of firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, intrusion detection systems and other security practices in place to keep your data safe from prying eyes. In addition to the virtual security just mentioned, data centers are protected by physical security. This may include but is not limited to retina scanners, backup power generators, backup cooling systems and multiple network providers. With cloud storage, your data can include songs, pictures, videos and documents whether they’re business related or otherwise are safely protected in large data centers.Network servers and Earth globe

Each data center, or storage area network, stores and replicates your data and then it is stored at several data centers across the country. If there is an issue at a data center, most times it would go unknown to you because your data has stayed out of harm’s way due to the backing up and storage of data. With all of that being said, cloud computing seems to be the safest way to back up and protect your documents.
